Gold plated works, silver plated works too, chrome won't. Many are plated with materials that tin/lead simply won't adhere to. IMPORTANT: You MUST use a banana plug that is solderable. Of course, you have to work with whatever you have. 25 Watt may just do it, but 40 Watt would be easier. A banana plug is quite a chunk of metal so a 15 Watt iron probably doesn't swing it. The other part is the size/Wattage of the soldering iron. So, you use the tip (with a little tin on it for better thermal conductance) to heat the work you're soldering. The golden rule with soldering is that you don't feed tin/lead to the tip of the iron, but to the objects you're trying to solder. You need a banana plug where the plastic part can be moved up on the cable (any plastic that stays on the plug would melt). First time I see anyone from the Triangle (other than me) on AVSForum.Īnyway, to get to the question: If you have a type of banana plug that can be soldered it should simply be a matter of first putting some tin on the bare wire end, sticking it in the end of the banana plug, and soldering that.
